Gliding was back at the HVC’s this year with electric scramble, E-Res and Limited Electric Glider flown.
The following report is from Mel Gillot, editor (and everything to do with) our EMF magazine.
This friendly event has successfully mixed various aeromodelling disciplines for several decades.
This year, for the first time electric gliders were the featured RC events. E-RES and LEG. The organisers were pleased with the response from competitors.
The two-and-a-bit days of the Champs were blessed with fine weather that was a bit breezy on the Saturday. And in true Aussie Summer tradition it was a balmy 38C both days! Thankfully CD Barry Burke ran a relaxed event allowing for cool-down and sustenance breaks. He carried out all the scoring manually—pencil and paper like—but won’t do that again!
The club has had the use of the Muswellbrook field for many decades and have made many comfortable lifestyle improvements. Verandahs, civilised toilets and overnight camping is allowed. The flying area is not a vast plain but big enough with forested areas on one side.
The RC flying area is on a slight slope that overlooks the three control line circles. Again, the understanding CD allowed slight flightline pauses to enable the contestants to watch fast team racers and combat flyers trying to destroy each others planes.
The comps began with Peter Pine winning the RC Scramble with his trusty Radian and then followed 13 rds of E-RES and 10 rds of Limited Electric Glider, LEG.
Klaus Metzger has been travelling long and campaigning hard lately and he was rewarded with a first in both events (thats his picture heading this report showing off his new OzeRes 3 that he won in Armidale just a few weeks before) . On the other hand it was terrific to see relative newcomer Bob Ash from Tamworth second in both. On the painful side Bob crashed his red/white OzeRes later in the weekend. Placings were rounded out with new competitor Peter Wilk from Pottsville in 4th E-RES and 3rd LEG.
The great thing about the HVC is that all types of modelling get flown over the weekend. It's a great place to catch up with old friends and to bring back memories of noisy control line models (according to Klaus, but they were once music to my ears).
