President's Message, April 2025

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick update....... and like most of us I can't believe we are already into April 25.

As we know the Aussie F5J Team are back from the Argentina World Champs with great results.

I'm sure everyone kept up to date via the great posts on social media.

Easter will soon be upon us and a few events are scheduled:

  • 20th LSF Scale Glider at Jerilderie..... Check out the LSF website or Face Book page for further details
  • SAM 1788 Old Timer Champs at West Wyalong .. check AEFA Web and FB for more info
  • AEFA Electric Flight Rally at West Wyalong .... Check our site for entry details

This year SAM 1788 and AEFA will be joining forces in couple of events and flying as one group which is fantastic.

Come along to West Wyalong for some relaxed flying and great camping facilities.

Also late last year CASA were been busy amending a few procedures.. namely MOP 067 & MOP 004.

This has snuck up on us to a degree as very little consultation was undertaken by CASA... and to a degree this is understandable.

I've attached MOP 067 & 004 in full for anyone who needs some bedtime reading.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Your Club will ensure they are compliant with Area Approvals etc. and the new requirements in MOP 067 however, for us, the guys flying on the ground there are some new things outlined in MOP 004 that we need to be aware of when we fly.

Below is just a snippet out of MOP 004 that applies to most of us:

Height Requirements when operating over 400ft

5.7          Operations up to 1000FT AGL

5.7.1     An observer/spotter is encouraged, but not a mandatory requirement.

5.7.2     Use of an Airband radio is not a mandatory requirement (unless when specified by CASA or operating within 5NM of a certified aerodrome).

5.8          Operations from 1000FT AGL up to 1500FT AGL

5.8.1     An observer/spotter is mandatory.

5.8.2     The operator is required to ensure that they are operating within the heights noted. For example, this may be assured through the use of technology such as telemetry, reference to other aircraft operating in the same airspace that are fitted with telemetry, or other distance and altitude measuring equipment.

5.8.3     Use of an Airband radio is not a mandatory requirement (unless when specified by CASA or operating within 5NM of a certified aerodrome).

5.9          Operations from 1500FT AGL up to 2000FT AGL

5.9.1     An observer/spotter is mandatory.

5.9.2     The operator is required to ensure that they are operating within the heights noted. For example, this may be assured through the use of technology such as telemetry, reference to other aircraft operating in the same airspace that are fitted with telemetry, or other distance and altitude measuring equipment.

5.9.3     Use of an Airband radio is mandatory.

As you can see for most of us that fly Gliders,  Old Timers and other models at height we do have some new responsibilities.

Please see your Clubs Committee members with any questions you have around these new requirements.

Happy flying and I'll see some of you at West Wyalong over Easter....and good luck to the guys flying Scale Glider at Jerilderie.

Kind Regards,

Terry Scolari
